You learn a lot from a purse

My sister Lauren, had an assignment for her class; to write about someones purse, explaining how its content reflected the carrier. She chose mine(: Who new one could learn so much from a purse! It is amazing how much stuff you can fit into it!
Enjoy

She picks up her Rosetti purse – all fourteen pounds of it – and swings it over her shoulder. On the outside the handbag seems standard enough with its brown leather trim, shiny fastenings, and bright florals. She selected the purse out herself after her old one wore out, undoubtedly drawn to its cheery array of colors – orange, teal, aqua, yellow, magenta, green, and pink. Her purse might not stand out in a crowd of all the other various shapes, sizes, and colors of other purses but its contents can tell a story.
The sack-like interior houses much more than one would think possible. A conspicuous book lies on the top, a cranberry red compact Bible with a scroll-like design on the front. Its gilded pages catch the light and match the embossed name on the front that reads “Allison G. A. Pyle.” Her parents gave her two middle names. The “G” stands for Grace, her grandmother’s name. Allison’s second middle name, “Akemi,” is a Japanese name – chosen to carry on her mother’s heritage – and means “bright and beautiful.” The Bible was given to Allison as a gift several years ago and it’s a book she likes to have wherever she goes, ready to pull out at a moment’s notice.
Beside the Bible rests a three and a half inch switch blade knight. The smooth sharp blade folds into a black exterior and a clip is anchored to one side. She received her wished-for knife as a birthday gift when she turned sixteen less than a year ago. Allison believes it never hurts to be prepared and no doubt she has the spunk to use her knife if need demanded it. Besides, it’s always handy for cutting open a package, dividing a piece of fruit to eat, or using for any other random purpose that seems to always arise.
But no matter what, Allison will stay in style with the fun accessories she must always have. She keeps Burt’s Bees pink lip gloss in her purse – a light shade. Her sunglasses are kept inside dark blue knit case, decorated with a random button. She proudly made it herself. The sunglasses themselves are aviators with a dark brown tint. The big shades look even bigger on her small face. They come in handy though now that she’s driving.
The evidence shows that Allison is a new driver on the road. She keeps her permit inside a plastic zip-lock bag in her purse so it won’t get damaged. It still looks clean and unbent even though she’s had it for several months now. Allison hopes to switch the paper permit to a real license later this year. She’s racked up enough daytime driving hours and only needs to get more time in at night.
Even without a driver’s license, Allison’s black wallet is full enough of other cards. She carries an assortment of gift cards from birthdays and Christmases that are still waiting to be used. The four craft store gift cards will help supply Allison’s constant need for yarn and other crafting supplies. When she’s not making something for someone else, she’s making something for herself. Allison’s gift cards to Starbucks and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf will support her penchant for caramel frappachinos and tea lattes. And when Allison gets the urge to get more accessories, she can use her gift cards to splurge at Icing and Clairs. In her wallet, she also keeps two library cards – one for Newport Library and one for Orange County Public Library. Allison can never have too many books.
In her purse, Allison also keeps her personal care kit, a pink flowered zippered bag that comes in handy on many occasions. Inside are mini scissors and tweezers – with cute Japanese designs on the handles – a basic nail file, nail clippers, floss, and safety pins. When someone gets a splinter or has a nail to fix, they know who to come to. Allison will have the solution. And as for safety pins, they can be used for all sorts of things. She used to keep nail polish in her as well – just in case. Just last week Allison added a new item to her purse. Someone needed some lotion and she did not carry any with her. So now she keeps a three ounce pink bottle of Sweet Pea lotion from Bath and Body works. Useful, plus it looks pretty and smells wonderful.
Stylish yet functional. That’s how she rolls.

  2. I don't know why, but this extremely well-written essay has inspired me with a crazy desire to own a purse. A man-purse? So much stuff can be stored and it looks natural! =)
